| Young happy people love listening to noise. Shhh! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Extreme Keyboard Damage! TAMPA, FL - Masquerade Ybor. The stage has been "graced" by bands such as Slayer, Biohazard, and GWAR, and now... ReGurgiTron! It was my first "official" noise show, my first solo performance, and my first performance as a "keyboard" player (which will make better sense when you realize that the "keyboard" I was playing has been modified - or circuit bent) and become a kind of unique noise maker. BTW, special thanks to the PitGoddess for her photographs of my set. In addition to photography, she produces a zine called "The Scrapyard" which focuses on the underground metal scene and other extreme music (like noise). Contact her and beg for a $1 copy at: thescrapyard1@hotmail.com The stage lighting was red, so most of the photos are red as well, and since the camera was digital and I requested no flash, they'll be a bit blurry - which works well for this kind of music. Here's a list of the gear I abused for the show: Main Instrument Casio CZ-101 (circuit bent) Pedals and Rack FX Moog Music MuRF filter DOD DFX-9 digital delay Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi (Russian) Boss DD-6 digital delay Line 6 Echo Pro digital delay. I lashed the effects and a piece of metal grating to a keyboard stand with bungee cords and duct tape. I used long cables to connect my effects and left the cables partially uncoiled so that it looked like a mess (top picture - left). My set, which ran about 25 minutes, was all very loud improvised noise. About halfway through, someone threw a pair of slinky panties on stage. So, chicks must dig ReGurgiTron.... Why do I bother to have a noise band? Glad you asked. I create noise because it's extreme, almost out of control. It's a creative test to manipulate the unlistenable into art. For me, it's being on the edge of chaos, working with (and abusing) equipment beyond its design and recommended uses. And the feeling I got when I first heard my noise blasting through the Masquerade Theater sound system - priceless! There are no rules in noise. No time limits, tempo, pitch, key, structure or expectations. It's open, extreme, unpredictable, experimental, and so underground that it looks up at the underground. More special thanks to Travis Morgan of Black Meat for adding me to the bill and trusting that I wouldn't blow the place up and to Mike Hendrick (DJ Jet) for all his hard work in setting up and promoting the show. |
